SolidWorks Guide & FAQ

Before Getting Started:

  • Use a CU Internet Connection: Ensure that you are either 1) on CU's campus network or 2) utilizing the CU VPN (if offsite). This is important for multiple steps through this process.

  • Tours = Access. Without completing a tour, you will not have access to request a license.

  • SolidWorks is always available for CEAS affiliates on-demand via CEAS Cloud Computing, accessible simply by most browsers regardless of operating system.

Step 1 - Access and License:

Q: Who can get access to SolidWorks at CU Boulder?

A: Generally, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences students, faculty, and staff are eligible for the ITLP-provided SolidWorks license. Some exceptions may be made for campus clubs and organizations, but these are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Q: How do I get started with SolidWorks?

A: Most people obtain access and a license key by completing a tour (physical or virtual) specific to their major or interests. Once you have completed an approved tour, you can submit a software license request form to receive the license key and download instructions.

Q: Which tour should I take to get SolidWorks access?

A: You have four tour options—two physical and two virtual. Choose based on your major or the space you intend to use:

  1. ITLL (In-Person Tour):

  2. Idea Forge (In-Person Tour):

  3. ITLL (Virtual Access):

    • An online version for those who do not need physical lab access, checkout equipment, or workshops.
    • ITLL Virtual Access Info
  4. Aerospace (Virtual Canvas Course):

Tip: If you’re an engineering student (non-Aero) who just needs SolidWorks, the ITLL In-Person Tour or ITLL Virtual Tour is usually the best route.

Q: How long does it take to have my access assigned after completing a tour?

A:

  • ITLL In-Person/Virtual Tour: Typically updates to your access take place overnight.
  • Aerospace Virtual Tour: May take 1–2 business days for the Aerospace staff to assign access manually.

Q: What version SolidWorks of SolidWorks is currently supported?

A: The current supported version is: SolidWorks 2024 Student Edition.

Q: Once I’ve completed the appropriate tour, how do I request a SolidWorks license key?

A:

  1. Make sure you are on the CU campus network or connected via the CU VPN.
  2. Go to the ITLPoint Software License Request form.
  3. Complete the form. A license key and installation instructions will be emailed to you.

Important: There is no error message if you are not on VPN or campus network. You must be on a CU network for the form to work properly.

Q: When trying to access the Software License Request form, I get an "Unauthorized Access" error.

A: When the "Unauthorized Access" error pops up, it is caused by either of the following:

  1. You do not have a tour / access method on record with the system. Please see the "Tours and Access Methods" dropdown above for more information.
  2. You are not accessing the form while on CU's campus network or the CU VPN

Q: How soon will I receive my license key after submitting the request?

A: License approvals typically synchronize overnight, so it’s possible you may need to wait up to one business day to receive the key if your request is submitted later in the day.

Q: I lost my license email or need another key. How do I request it?

A: You can request additional license keys via the same form. However, if you’ve requested more than two times in a given year, you may need to submit a ticket to ITLP IT for assistance.

Step 2 - Installation:

Q: What if I’m having trouble installing SolidWorks on my personal machine?

A: Common issues include:

  1. Not removing old versions properly before upgrading.
  2. Saving to incorrect folders (e.g., OneDrive) can cause versioning conflicts.
  3. Modules or Add-ins (like certain Electrical modules) might need to be deselected during installation if they cause errors.

If you get stuck:

  • Windows Users: Make sure you have administrative privileges, the correct version of the license key, and the full installer.
  • Mac Users: SolidWorks does not natively run on macOS. You’ll need to use Boot Camp or a Virtual Machine (VM)/Parallels. Note: Support from Buff Techs on VM issues is limited.

Tip for Mac Users: If you are unable to install SolidWorks on your device, you can access CEAS Cloud Computing via browser at any time.

Q: Do I really need to remove old SolidWorks versions first?

A: Yes. Fully uninstalling older SolidWorks versions and cleaning any leftover installation folders is recommended to avoid licensing or compatibility issues. Please consult this guide.

Q: What version of SolidWorks should I install?

A: Please see the Version Information dropdown section in "Step 1 - Access and License" for details.

Q: My serial numbers don’t match or the license key fails. What should I do?

A: Double-check you are using the exact key provided by ITLP, and that you do not have another conflicting SolidWorks installation. If issues persist, please submit an IT ticket. Important Note: You must be on CU’s network or VPN to access the ticketing system.

Q: Where do I go if I need further help or have complicated technical issues?

A:

  1. Submit a ticket to ITLP IT. Important Note: You must be on CU’s network or VPN to access the ticketing system.
  2. Visit Buff Techs Support (for personal device troubleshooting). Note: Support from Buff Techs on Virtual Machines is limited.

Other FAQ's:

Q: How do I import custom drawing templates used by my department or labs?

A: Your program/department (e.g., Idea Forge, Mechanical Engineering) may provide a ZIP file of templates. You must:

  1. Download the template files.
  2. Extract them to a folder on your local drive.
  3. Configure SolidWorks file locations (Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations) to point to the folder with the new templates.

Q: How do I get additional SolidWorks add-ins (e.g., Simulation, CAM)?

A: During or after installation, you can select/deselect specific add-ins in the “Add-Ins” dialog.

Q: Can I use the license after I graduate?

A: No - CU Boulder’s contract with Dassault Systèmes does not allow for post-graduate usage of SolidWorks. If you need a more permanent/commercial license, you must purchase directly from SOLIDWORKS or a reseller.

Q: Does the university support SolidWorks professional certifications?

A: Yes, some instructors and departments encourage it. For specific info:
