Before Getting Started:

SolidWorks is always available for CEAS affiliates on-demand via CEAS Cloud Computing, accessible simply by most browsers regardless of operating system.

Step 1 - Access and License:

General Access and Eligibility

Q: Who can get access to SolidWorks at CU Boulder?

A: Generally, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences students and teaching faculty are eligible for the ITLP-provided SolidWorks license. Some exceptions may be made for campus clubs and organizations, but these are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Q: How do I get started with SolidWorks?

A: Most people obtain access and a license key by completing a tour (physical or virtual) specific to their major or interests. Once you have completed an approved tour, you can submit a software license request form to receive the license key and download instructions.

Requesting the License Key

Q: Once I’ve completed the appropriate tour, how do I request a SolidWorks license key?

Go to the ITLPoint Software License Request form.
Complete the form. A license key and installation instructions will be emailed to you.

Q: How soon will I receive my license key after submitting the request?

A: License approvals typically synchronize overnight, so it’s possible you may need to wait up to one business day to receive the key if your request is submitted later in the day.

Q: I lost my license email or need another key. How do I request it?

A: You can request additional license keys via the same form. However, if you’ve requested more than two times in a given year, you may need to submit a ticket to ITLP IT for assistance.

Step 2 - Installation:

Installation and Technical Issues

Q: What if I’m having trouble installing SolidWorks on my personal machine?

A: Common issues include:

Not removing old versions properly before upgrading.
Saving to incorrect folders (e.g., OneDrive) can cause versioning conflicts.
Modules or Add-ins (like certain Electrical modules) might need to be deselected during installation if they cause errors.

If you get stuck:

Windows Users: Make sure you have administrative privileges, the correct version of the license key, and the full installer.
Mac Users: SolidWorks does not natively run on macOS. You’ll need to use Boot Camp or a Virtual Machine (VM)/Parallels. Note: Support from Buff Techs on VM issues is limited.

Tip for Mac Users: If you are unable to install SolidWorks on your device, you can access CEAS Cloud Computing via browser at any time.

Q: Do I really need to remove old SolidWorks versions first?

A: Yes. Fully uninstalling older SolidWorks versions and cleaning any leftover installation folders is recommended to avoid licensing or compatibility issues. Please consult this guide.

Q: What version of SolidWorks should I install?

A: Please see the Version Information dropdown section in "Step 1 - Access and License" for details.

Q: My serial numbers don’t match or the license key fails. What should I do?

A: Double-check you are using the exact key provided by ITLP, and that you do not have another conflicting SolidWorks installation. If issues persist, please submit an IT ticket. Important Note: You must be on CU’s network or VPN to access the ticketing system.

Using the Software and Custom CU Templates

Q: How do I import custom drawing templates used by my department or labs?

A: Your program/department (e.g., Idea Forge, Mechanical Engineering) may provide a ZIP file of templates. You must:

Download the template files.
Extract them to a folder on your local drive.
Configure SolidWorks file locations (Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations) to point to the folder with the new templates.
